It’s official, my suitcase is packed and I’m ready to go! Anyone that knows me, knows that it took me about a month to fully pack for this trip. First was making a list of what I needed, then rewriting it when I thought of more, then ripping the whole thing up and starting over when it became over 2 pages long. But, I managed to finally finish and fit all of my belongings into my suitcase and a few carry-ons. As our departure date comes closer, I can’t help but to feel nervous and anxious. The only times I’ve been out of the country have been on vacations with my mother, for less than a week at a time. This will most definitely be a change for me, traveling out of the country without her, and being gone for almost 3 weeks! Although I love to travel to new places, I’d more consider myself a homebody, so this will be a big adventure for me. Although I am nervous, I am also very excited for this opportunity and for what it holds. Throughout our pre-departure meetings, we’ve discussed the lives of the people who live in the Dominican Republic, and of the girls who attend the Mariposa Dominican Republic Foundation. It's one thing to read about their lives and poverty stricken areas in which many of these girls have come to live in, but will be a whole different and eye opening experience to see it firsthand. The Mariposa Foundations goal is to “empower and educate young women,” and I couldn’t be more grateful to have an opportunity to be a part of that, even if only for a short time. I cannot wait to meet the girl that I will be paired up with at the foundation for our Spanish/English tutoring, and I know I’ll fall in love with her and every child that I meet in both the foundation and the schools.

AuthorHello! My name is Casey, and I'm a junior at SUNY Buffalo State College. I am currently working towards my undergraduate degree in Childhood Education, with a concentration in English. I am so excited to have been given such an amazing opportunity to expand my knowledge in the field of education, while simultaneously exploring the beautiful culture of the Dominican Republic.
